ARTIST STATEMENT

Modern contemporary artwork

Momo Kim was born in Seoul in 1992. She studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York. After graduation, she lived in Vietnam for a while and worked on new media projects that introduced iPad painting. She is currently working actively in Seoul.

Momokim's work is about the meaning of life and the well-being of everyday life, using a variety of materials found in contemporary daily life. In her work, she tries to represent the individual's life and express the contemporary life by collecting one by one pieces from the daily life of a private space to the moment of a simple outdoor activity. By creating a vague encounter between pure art and illustration, she breaks the boundaries of classic artworks while showing kitsch with a lot of decorative elements.

Momok Kim's works are inspired by various cultural areas such as Korea, New York, and Vietnam. She creates works based on her own experiences and memories, using daily life, folk beliefs, and totems as materials. Momok Kim's works are stories about the lives and identities of people living in contemporary times. She wants to remember the importance of everyday life and the meaning of life through her work.

<home sweet home>
In Greek, a painter is known as "someone who draws everyday life". For many people, home is a place where personal history resides. All of the objects at home remembers moments in life and have contemporaneous characteristics. By recording these objects through art, the objects portrayed on canvas represent moments in daily life and functions as a memento, keeping the history behind safe. People often try their hardest to keep their daily life intact and even thrive just to have an ordinary life. Like many others, in order to protect her daily lives, Momo Kim used scenes at home that keeps her calm and reminds her of precious moments and turned it into art using her techniques and style. Her artwork not only functions as her safe of memories but also as represents her eager desire to keep her ordinary daily life intact. 

<endless images>
Using hashtags, randomly find and use memes, movie scenes, Instagram images, master paintings and posters. The selected image gives a glimpse of contemporary life. The thoughts and feelings of living in this era are revealed in Momo Kim's works, and the infinite images used lightly in the present era have been sublimated into works of art. The title briefly describes the source of the random image and includes hashtags for the owner of the randomly obtained source to find, along with the hashtags used in the search. In other words, it is a sign of a source.

The main patterns of our daily life are created and reproduced by combining pieces of the endless images that are readily available through the smartphone in our hands. Other than these creative activities, MoMo artworks about her daily thoughts or create installations that reflect her life. Whenever she feels lonely, MoMo creates abstract or collage works using her favorite images. 

모모킴은 1992년 서울에서 태어나 뉴욕에서 일러스트레이션을 전공했습니다. 이후 베트남에서 잠시 거주하며 아이패드 페인팅을 알리는 뉴미디어 작업들을 했습니다. 현재는 서울에서 활발히 작업하고 있습니다.

모모킴은 동시대 일상에서 만나는 다양한 소재들을 가지고 삶의 의미와 일상의 안녕을 기원하는 작업들을 합니다. 그녀의 작품에서는 사적인 공간의 일상을 담은 작업부터 소박한 야외활동의 순간까지 하나 둘 조각을 모아 개인의 삶을 대변하고 나아가 동시대 삶을 표현하고자 합니다. 순수예술과 일러스트레이션 사이의 모호한 그 조우를 연출함으로써, 장식적 요소가 다분한 키치함을 보여주면서도 클래식한 아트워크의 경계를 무너트리는 작업을 합니다.

모모킴의 작품은 한국과 뉴욕, 베트남 등 다양한 문화권에서 영감을 받았습니다. 그녀는 자신의 경험과 기억을 바탕으로 일상과 민간신앙, 토템 등을 소재로 작품을 제작합니다. 모모킴의 작품은 동시대를 살아가는 사람들의 삶과 정체성에 대한 이야기입니다. 그녀는 자신의 작품을 통해 일상의 소중함과 삶의 의미를 되새기고자 합니다.

<home sweet home>
삶을 살아가는 동안 만나는 일상의 조각들은 예술이 된다. 화가란 그리스어로 ‘삶을 그리는 자(Someone who draws life)이다. 집이라는 공간은 하나의 개인의 역사가 깃들어 있는 공간이다. 일상의 순간을 기억할 수 있는 오브제들, 이 모든 것은 바로 작가 자신을 말하는 동시에 동시대성을 지닌 문화적 오브제로 작용하고 있다. 기록된 크고 작은 오브제들은 각각의 사적인 히스토리를 가지고 상황과 시대적 배경을 은유적으로 표현하고 있다. 평범한 일상을 지키고 연속하기 위해 끊임없이 기록을 반복하고 작업함으로써 스스로에게 삶이란 무엇인지에 대해 질문하고 삶에 대한 고찰과 인식을 상기시키는 행위를 작업으로 표현한다. 

페인팅 작품의 한계를 넘어서 새롭고 신선한 작품을 창작하기 위해 다양한 재료의 혼합과 아이디어의 조합을 통해 작은 드로잉부터 눈부신 페인팅 그리고 설치 작품까지 예술의 경계에 대해 폭넓게 오가는 작업을 하고 있습니다. 첫 예술 작품 활동의 시작은 불완전이라는 사회와 인간의 모습을 담아내기부터 시작하여 현재는 동시대를 살아가는 작가의 시선을 통해 다양한 시각과 콘텐츠 매체에서 받은 영감과 동시대를 살아가는 개인의 일상 순간을 기록하고 관찰하며 거대한 하나의 역사와 예술가의 인생을 대변한다는 목표를 가지고 작품 활동을 이어오고 있습니다. 미술사에서 가장 중요하게 생각하는 것은 살아가고 있는 동시대를 어떻게 작가의 시선으로 담아내냐는 것 입니다. 그렇기에 작품 대부분은 현대 미디어기기로 널리 알려진 동시대 기기 아이패드를 사용해 미술 재료로 사용해 작품을 만들어냅니다. 작품 활동을 하며 스스로 속해있는 동시대의 미디어 이미지(광고 또는 영상의 화면 구성)에서 영감을 받거나 직접 일상을 보내며 촬영한 사진을 기반으로 마치 포토샵이나 화면 필터를 씌운 듯한 텍스트 또는 이모티콘등을 작품 속에 그려 넣기도 합니다. 

오래 간직할 수 있도록 만들어진 작은 드로잉과 콜라쥬 기법의 작품은 언제나 보아도 좋은 인생의 동반자와 같고 이를 기반으로 만들어지는 페인팅은 그의 끊임없이 이어지는 세계관을 의미합니다. 더 나아가 설치 작품은 인생관을 대변하는 거울과도 같습니다. 모든 작품들은 젊은 세대(Young Generation)를 대변하고 뉴욕에서 영향받은 서구적 이미지 그리고 동양의 아름다움과 이국적 정취를 느낄 수 있는 나트랑의 모습을 포함하여 동시대를 살아가는 모든 것의 결과로서 세월이 지나도 항상 작품에서 은유적으로 시대를 읽고 작가를 느낄 수 있습니다. 우리가 어떤 시대에 살고 어떤 순간에서 삶의 의미를 찾고자 하는지 다양한 시대 감성과 이미지를 통해 전하고자 하는 순간들을 하나의 프레임 속에 예술가의 시선으로 각색하여 동시대의 삶을 비추는 창작 활동을 합니다.

”주목하지 않으면 지나쳐 버리는 순간들이 많다. 내게 예술은 특별한 것이 아닌 일상의 작은 순간을 주목하고 기록하는 삶의 과정과도 같다. 현대 사회의 휴대폰이나 디지털 기기 아이패드를 이용해 작업에 사용하는 것도 우리가 살고 있는 동시대를 담아내는 것 이고 이를 바탕 으로 만들어지는 작업물들은 인생의 작은 단서들이 되 곤 한다. 작품 속 도자기를 포함한 메모나 레이아웃, 꽃, 동물 그리고 텍스트들은 시시각각 빠른 변화 속 나를 이 야기 해주는 조각이다. 이러한 조각 파편들을 모아 새롭 게 이미지를 구성하고 그리는 과정이 즐겁다. 이런 그림 그리는 과정들은 삶을 어떤 방향으로 나아가고 나를 재 정의하는 끊임없는 과정에 있게 한다.“

We often overlook fleeting moments if we don‘t pay attention. To me, art is not something extraordinary, but rather a process of living that focuses on and records the small moments of everyday life. Using contemporary tools like smartphones and iPads in my work is also a way of capturing the times we live in. The resulting pieces often become small clues to life. The ceramics, memos, layouts, flowers, animals, and texts in my works are fragments that evoke my ever-changing self in this fast-paced world. I enjoy the process of collecting these fragmented pieces and composing and drawing new images. This process of painting keeps me constantly moving forward and redefining myself in life. - momo’s artist note

‘In the <home sweet home>depicted by artist MOMOKIM, there is a meaning of protecting ordinary life from bad things. The dog has been considered a creature that drives away evil and prevents disasters since ancient times. In folk paintings, dogs were drawn on the door or in the house to ward off evil spirits and pray for the peace and happiness of the household. The meaning of spiritual protection is closely related to the lives of our Korean ancestors. People have traditionally regarded disasters such as natural disasters, diseases, and wars as the work of evil forces. Momokim's work reinterprets and modernizes these elements while expressing identity at the same time, across the Western and Eastern cultures.’



MOMOKIM이 묘사한 <home sweet home>에는 일상 생활을 나쁜 것들로부터 보호한다는 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 개는 고대부터 악을 물리치고 재앙을 예방하는 생물로 여겨져 왔습니다. 민화에서는 악령을 막고 가정의 평화와 행복을 기원하기 위해 문이나 집 안에 개가 그려졌습니다. 영적 보호의 의미는 우리 한국 조상들의 삶과 밀접한 관련이 있습니다. 사람들은 전통적으로 자연재해, 질병, 전쟁과 같은 재앙을 악의 세력의 작품으로 간주했습니다. Momokim의 작업은 서양과 동양 문화를 아우르는 동시에 정체성을 표현하면서 이러한 요소들을 재해석하고 현대화합니다.
